Found the problem

Found the source of the problem, the inlet cam pulley has bent where the key goes in. I'm not sure if its because the the key is made of hardened steel and the pulley is aluminium? but yeah where the key goes in its bent it out so the pulleys just rattles around and has about about 2mm movement either side! Couldve been worse lol. so im on the hunt for new pulleys. I've been looking and it looks like most pulleys for a H22 fit?

Fund these AEM ones, i want to buy proper decent ones so something like this doesnt happen again lol

When it all turns up as well as a new cambelt kit, il fit it all and tow it to a performance garage who can time it properly and put her on a rolling road etc, about time she goes on one haha.

The ludes gana be off the road for a couple of months now whilst this and a few other bits are sorted out.
The coilovers will be bought too as both front springs have snapped :S and the rear shocks are on there way out lol.
im going to a scrap yard too to find any old complete battery tray and fit that so i dont have to use cable ties anymore.

I'l try and sort the headlight out too and might look into re wiring them both so i can move them all individually, need to find the wiring diagram for that first lol
might do all the brakes aswell, put drilled and grooved discs on the front, then play around with the rear brake pressure adjuster try get them working a bit better haha

so im gana be driving my dads old mx5 till all this gets sorted :L but at least then when its done i will have ticked off a huge part of the to do list

It is a bit alarming that the cam gear failed. What brand was it?

Should be well sorted at the end of all that though, so well done.

Nowt wrong with driving an mx-5 in the mean-time, in my book...

Do you know, something to do with the cam gear rings a bell. Have you examined it yet? Is there a repair on it?

hope it hasn't damaged the cam but should all be ok! @NafemanNathan Not from what i can see, when i take it off il take a proper look and put some pics up. its weird though, it moves side to side like 2mm but you can push and pull it at each end and it moves to like the bolts not done up enough :S the exhaust one's not much better, its solid and doesnt move but when its running it has a small wobble :S probably best to change them haha
Next couple of days im going to get my old mini back on all 4 wheels ready to sell

sad times! so will probably be this weekend or next week before i get a chance to look properly now lol

They're modified F22 cam gears. Is there a washer or something behind the exhaust one, which isn't behind the intake one?

oh right F22 pulleys lol, il have to change my search or still get the H22's? says on the site they fit, so i might message them and find out

Looks like i cant get insured on the mazda :S apparently i have to be 25 to drive a 1.6! i said, so i can insure a 27 year old 2.0 honda but not a 2003 1.6 mx5 :S yes, was the response i got lol
So its going to be my dads vectra of love

I was going to suggest enquiring about the cam gears before purchasing any just to be sure.

Shame about the MX5... They're seen as a sportier car than Preludes and they're RWD.

like you say that could have been a lot worse
i read somewhere that adjustable cam gears that only have three fixings are to be avoided due to them slipping
sounds like the woodruff keys did their job and the pulley are at fault
