How to remove 3g rear number plate holder

Post by wurlycorner » Sat Apr 18, 2015 10:13 am

Cant suss it out!

There are 4 studs from the number plate holder, that go through into the rear panel of the car.
The studs are welded to the number plate holder, so they can't be undone from that side.
On the inside of the boot, the bottom 2 studs have ordinary hex nuts on them, which can be undone.
The top 2 studs go into what look like riv-nuts.
WTF? You can't undo the stud from the outside and you can't under a riv-nut.

How the hell do you get it off?!
The one on my 3g is all wibbly-wobbly so I want to replace it with the one off my breaker, but don't know how to get either of them off at the mo... :?

Anyone removed one before?

I was going to be tackling that with my Aerodeck. It's exactly the same as the 3rd gen lude. You can only grind the head off and knock the other portion out. Then use a new nut and bolt after you've painted around the open hole to prevent rust.

I was hoping there might be another way...

What an utter crock of jobby way to assemble it in the first place! Seriously, who the drokk would think of doing it such a gentleman's sausage-arsed way? :tosser:

Yep, samiya's right. The bodyshop stuck a pair of mole grips on the 2 round nuts and undid them
drokk knows why they put 2 plain and 2 round nuts on though
