EP3 Wheels on my ATR - Colour Dilema

Post by Shiny » Fri May 10, 2013 10:11 am

I've bought a set of EP3 alloy wheels, always liked the EP3 wheels and prefer them to the ATR ones.

Now i had it all set in my mind that i would refurb & paint the wheels similar to mine, ie a gloss back base then blended silver from the front face only to give a shadow silver effect, but perhaps with a slightly darker silver.

But then i saw sk8xtrm's black ATR with white wheels and it stirred up old feelings. I've always had a thing for black cars with white wheels. When i was about 12 back in the early 80's, i had a yellow Mini 1275GT Scalextric car which i dechromed, sprayed black and painted the wheels white (with Tipex :agree:/> ) and it was just uber cool.

This got me thinking that a nice set of powder coated white EP3 wheels may get me hard. So now i have a dilemma.

Option 1

Go with my original plan paint them a shadow silver. It suits the image of the car better and will be a better long term solution. I can always paint my current ATR wheels white if i really get the urge. No plans on lowering the car, so silver work work best at stock ride height.

Option 2

Fook it, just paint them white, you know that white looks awesome on a black car. If really want the shadow silver look, you can always put the old ATR wheels back on. Ah, but then will white look right sitting at stock height? If not, you'll need to lower the car and you know that whilst although a lowered car looks awesome, from past experience it has proved a right pain in the arse around Swindon using the car as a daily and the missus will moan again. You really enjoying driving a car around at stock height and don't miss having to slow to a stop for every bump and hole and it is nice to actually be able to get into a few carparks for a change.

If anyone is any good at Photoshop, then they are welcome to have a go at the two choices, I will be sticking them on this -

Come on them, convince me....

I like 'em best in that dark silver/metallic grey in the second pic (on the red one).
Difficult to know how they'd look against the black though?

Nah, i usually wash the car every week, so keeping it clean shouldn't be much of an issue.

Whilst i love the look, i'm not wholly convinced it is the look that i'm after, being an old man and all that. Image

I don't really like white wheels with a black car.

But... it seems to me that if you can remember back to thinking along these lines when you were 12 then this is an itch you will always need to scratch. I say drokk it, do it, and do it now. White EP3's and drop the car. I am bearing in mind what you say about practicalities and about the missus, but if you do it, then at least you've done it and you can always restore the ride height and re-paint the wheels if you decide it's too much/not right later. You'll be making an informed decision at that point and it'll be easier if you do decide to reverse things.

If you compromise now you will still be thinking along these lines next year, or the year after...

:)
