Track day driver passes out due to exposure to CO

The guy seemed a bit of an idiot to me... He said he could smell gas! Then he started feeling dazed and confused and then weak. Surely it doesn't take a genius to think you might need to crack a window or something ?

An engine running in good tune should emit very low levels of carbon monoxide.
From a manufactures point of view, it is a negligible risk. Adding a carbon monoxide alarm would add costs to production.

From experience of using gas detectors at work, when one goes off people will just swear at it and turn it off. They also have to be calibrated (6 monthly where I work, likely the same in many other places). If you've just bought a car, are you likely to want to have to pay an extra ~£50 to get a gas detector calibrated every 6 months?
Maybe when the car is new it will get done, but in 10-15 years time (when its more likely to be needed)?

Frik knows, I just know I heard him saying he could smell gas. And surely he'd recognise the smell of fuel

Smell inception. Finding out there was a gas leaking probably made him imagine there was the smell from gas ovens or something. Phantosmia?

Like people unknowingly drinking something non-alcoholic but acting drunk because they think they should be.

That's a wake up call for anyone who's got an exhaust that's leaking. Was the manifold cracked?

CO itself might be, but when it's a by-product of combustion in an engine, if the CO emmission is getting into the cabin, you would also get related combustion odours as well.
