That's pretty much true in Florida. The only "Jap" motors you really see around that are modded are Scion xB's and xC's, and they're still done pretty shockingly.
The problem is, that you can go and buy a 2.0i 4th gen lude for $4k, or a 5.9L V8 300hp Dodge truck with 5 seats and an 8ft bed for less than half that, and all the service parts are a fraction of the cost as well.
I did replacement brake pads and discs all round on an Acura RSX, and the bill for the customer was about $400, and that was with labour costs being $100
