New 5th Gen Owner in Manc

Post by AKT-VTI » Mon Mar 02, 2015 11:48 pm

Hi,

I'm Abul. I've recently bought my first Honda Prelude - my brother used to drive a 4th gen 2.2Vtec a good few years ago and I always liked the 5th gens. Its a 98 S plate 2.2VTi 4WS Auto (maybe motegi - has motegi badge, wheels and bodykit). I've always liked these cars and wanted to get one. I saw a decent one for sale a couple of months back at a local dealer. The car is pretty much standard as far I can tell and has decent service history. The previous owner did change a couple of the badges :? so I'll be changing them back to standard I think. Also it has an aftermarket exhaust back box (Longlife) which I'd also like to change back to the original. Other than that it needs a good service and thorough valet! :)

Unfortunately I had a bit of bad luck on the first day I bought it - someone reversed into me whilst I was filling up with fuel - literally 10 mins after driving away from the dealer  Anyhow it went through insurance and they considered it a total loss - but I've decided to keep the vehicle and get it sorted. The damage wasnt much - just some paint on the front bumper from what I can tell so I was a bit surprised they wrote it off.

Anyway - I don't really know that much about cars - I've been reading some of the posts on here and you guys have an amazing amount of knowledge and experience. Would be great to share some of that and pick up on some skills too hopefully. I'm not after making it into a super-fast racing maching or anything - just like it how Honda had it - and I'll probably be only using on weekends or in the summer. :)

I need to get a new MOT as part of the deal to keep the car so I'll be getting that done soon. Also full service and timing belt etc changed, plus looking to change some rubber bushes etc as there are some knocks / rattles which don't sound great. I'll be getting this done via a trusted mechanic who I've known for a few years now - not cheap but trust worthy and knows his stuff.

I haven't got many pics of the vehicle yet (haven't even had time to give a wash or anything yet!). Here's some from my phone for now....from the advert for the car :)

Welcome.
Gutting to hear about someone reversing into you straight after buying!
And very annoying that the insurers decided to write it off
Looks like you could do with floor mats for it  5th gen ones don't seem to come up that frequently actually. Some people have put 4g ones in instead

I think that car started life down here, hence the 'CR' registration.

And I didn't think anyone was going to beat @Edd!

Welcome to the club Abul :)

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Sounds like it shouldn't take much to put right again though :) You do have to wonder about some of these insurance companies sometime

I had an exhaust system on my civic coupe from long life, they did a pretty good job and offer a lifetime guarantee :) give me a shout if you decide to get rid of the backbox, be interested to see some pics :)

Hi All,

Thanks for the welcome! :)

Yes 10 mins to write off was a shock - couldn't believe the other driver didn't brake - I saw it all happen in kind of slow motion!

wurlycorner - yes I'll be looking into some OEM mats as and when they come available (like you say prob never!)

Jamie p 2013 - I was on about the other dodgy badges on the car (see pic of the wonky on one the bootlid and the red faded one on the bonnet).. I may not know much, but I do know the motegi badges are in demand! :D

G-lude - yes I need to source a decent condition OEM back box (ideally with the chrome tips) and then I'll probably be looking to sell the longlife back box - looks to be in good condition - I just want to go back to OEM. Anyone know of someone on the forum selling a back box around the Manchester / Northwest area perhaps (I'll have a look on the sales thread too) ?

Pretty sure there is someone selling an oem 5th gen back box in the for sale section actually...
