Oil light flickering on and of. Oil is full. HELP

Post by crigal.bb6 » Mon Sep 02, 2013 1:17 am

:? Started flickering on the motorway. Checked oil level, its full! Has anyone else experienced this before? Is it quite common?
Plan of action:-
Change oil and filter.
Change engine oil pressure switch near oil filter?

Ah mate :(

Don't panic, but when my first engine died, I first lost vtec. Then within a week or so my oil light was flickering, particularly on idle, also had a jumpy idle and revs would dip really low when the wheel was turned.

Drop your oil and look for shavings, if it looks good, replace your oil pressure switch and see if there's any change

Agreed with the posts above. If you don't have a pressure gauge you can fit to check actual pressure (attach where the pressure switch goes) then I'd try; electrical connection to the pressure switch, then change the pressure switch, then oil and filter (pay close attention to the condition/contents of the oil when draining).

Is sounding like previous oil pump failures on here though :( really hope for you that it isn't

What oil are you running?

Happened to just a handful of us on here now. Mine started making itself known when I'd park up. The light would flicker on on the last brake when the oil would "slosh". But yes, sadly down to oil pump failure for me and the oil was full of metal shavings.

So far all of us had been running 5w40. Do you know what you've been running, and what brand?

Try changing the oil pressure switch - it's only about £10 and a new one will then give you a known good point of reference.

I had a flickering light in my Legnum, and a new switch sorted it right out.

Ok im using halfords semi synthetic 10w40. Lol . Going to be honest this oil was never meant to stay in as long as it has it, was meant as a quick flush out then some good stuff in. 3-4 mounths its been in the car probably only done 1000miles or so. Been topping it up regularly with castrole semi synthetic 10w40.
So its looking like its going to be the end of my engine. Got the day off so i will get to it and see if i need a new engine. If i check to see if there is a fault will it give me a code? Worth a try??
