Just been reading on some 'mercan forums and they say original OEM seals were rubber but later ones were plastic with o-rings and the advantage is that you can just knock them in from the outside without needing to take the cam cover off.
I think that gets the win from me... I'll head off to Honda in a bit and ask them about there being different types.
btw merlin, here's another one of the aftermarket cam seals same as the skunk thing but cheaper

My thinking is that since you can't see the thing properly once the vtec solenoid's put on there, is there much point going for brand on this?
EDIT:
The thread I'm referring to that seems to cover it most is here

Knock them in?! But they have an inner lip unless they're fubar'd

Yep, there's some debate about that in the thread. Some saying the OEM ones have 'em, some saying they don't?indigolemon wrote:Knock them in?! But they have an inner lip unless they're fubar'd
I seriously don't want to be removing the cam cover just to replace this one bloody seal

Having looked at some old US threads a while back I concluded the part was simply superceeded by a seal with lips both sides. People were replacing old knackered cam seals (without a second lip) on their Preludes, Civics Integra's and CRX's, but when ordering the genuine part with supposedly the right part number according to the OEM parts list, they'd turn up with two lips.wurlycorner wrote:Yep, there's some debate about that in the thread. FWIW, I just had a look through the service manual. Earliest pages that an H22 appears in is the first supplement document.
The exploded diagram for the cambelt job shows the 'rubber' cam seal as being lips on both ends.
I guess it would be possible to pull a rubber one out without too much aggro, but can't see that a plastic one would knock in?

I'd do it while it's apart too - don't want to have to take the cam cover off again just for this one bloody seal... If you already have one of these supposed later (or an after market) seal with O-rings, just replace the O-rings rather than the whole thing again.NafemanNathan wrote:No mate. It only needs replacing if you've got a leak. Just they can be quite prone to leaking, so Merlin is refreshing everything he can whilst the engine is out by the sounds of itbb1boy wrote:Whats this?????
