Why are 245/45/16 tyres so big?

Post by 106pete » Thu Sep 19, 2013 6:29 pm

I've just fitted my 9j rear supra wheels and found the tyres are massive! Even tho technically they should be the same just wider....

This is my 16x8 wheel with 225/45/16 next to the 16x9 245/45/16 tyre

Not a great pic but overall the difference is around 20mm but why??

Because the profile is a percentage of the width. Increase the width but keep the percentage the same = larger profile.

yep. you would need to go down to something like a 245/40 16 to retain the same profile.

You currently have 18mm difference :geek:

The closest you can get is 245/40 but then you will be 7mm smaller.

Indeed.
It's a ratio.

(Ask Donald about Ratio's - he's our expert on them it would seem, provided they're a 1:2 ratio (or is that 1.2 ratios? ;) )
