Hub nut confusion :s

Post by Merlin » Thu Oct 24, 2013 1:10 pm

I hope someone may know the answer to this. Why do I have 36mm hub nuts on the front of my 4th gen?

I need to get a new hub nut as one of my ones is a bit chewed up. Vanzep gave me a spare one but it was a different size (24mm) so I thought that was wrong. Looking at Lings both the UK 94 th gen and UK 97 5th gen use 24mm hub nuts :?

Why do I have different? Is it a JDM thing?

You sure the 36mm isn't the size of the socket and the 24mm is M24? ;-)

Hmmmm I am all confused now. You are probably right. I need to speak with 3rd gen Steve to see why the spare one wouldn't fit :?

A new nut from Honda is only a fiver.

So have you actually tried Nick's 24mm nut?

You got a picture so we can see the difference?

I don't know the issue as it was Steve putting the hub nut on :? I have gone an ordered two brand new nuts anyway. I'll have a look at all of them (original, spare, and new ones) on Saturday and report back.

Just thinking, it could be that the spline size of the front and rear spindles are the same but they take different nuts with outer diameter sizes?. Doesnt the rear nut take a 32mm socket? It could have been a nut for the rear that nick gave me :?

Edit - Nope it isnt that. Lings says the spindle is 22mm

:? Because you're special?

No difference in the hubs UKDM/JDM that I'm aware of.

I have a brand new oem rear hub nut at home I can measure the thread and A/F size for tonight to confirm that out of interest...

It looks like this once fitted, if that's any help

I've got 2 impact sockets at home, one 32mm and one 36mm. The 32mm was/is for the Aerodeck/3rd gen Prelude, the 36mm is for the 4th gen Prelude ;-)

A lot of people make the mistake of gauging a nut by it's across-flats (A/F) dimension and not by it's actual thread size, hence my first statement.

I was always sure of it in my mind that you need a 36mm socket for the front and a 32mm for the back. What threw me is why the spare nut from Vanzep didnt fit, yet it was able to thread onto a spare driveshaft :? Like I say I'll find out on Saturday.
