Are you replacing the valve stem seals? Rubber bits can get badly affected by being soaked in degreasers (go all soft and such like).
I did consider that, which is why I was happy to dilute the degreaser for one. I did have a read up on it before hand and couldn't find any info on Gunk or the seals to suggest it would be an issue.

I don't know actually. I'll check! (when I'm home).

Came out pretty good, you do need to get into the areas and agitate it with a brush with Gunk.

As for the loose bits, very odd - could it be to do with the broken sensor? The ends perhaps?

Further thought on the magnetic idea... If it is magnetic, might not be off a sump plug - should there be a magnatic end on the inside of the core plug in the head maybe???

Could whip that off to check if it looks like something has detached from the end of it?

(I've never seen that before, but you never know?!)

Ahhhhh! That could have been some of the internals as this was all I actually removed...

I think those two small discs would easily fit in the remains of the sensor and wouldn't have fallen out until I stood it on its end. Well done Sherlock!!! :clap: :D

They just musn't have dropped out when I was flipping the head to remove the valves.

And yeah, I was going to do a bit more scrubbing with neat Gunk when my new bargainous bulk buy arrives ;-)

What are we calling the core plug? I'd hate the idea of anything internal and that size coming loose :shock:

I don't know what the remains of the temp sender is (copper/brass), but otherwise there's nothing else left to attract a magnet.

That's a core plug (the round bit with the allen head).

As are the other similar but smaller things you can see in these pics;

They're the only steel bits in the stripped head, aside from the valve guides and seats (which may be such high carbon content they aren't magnetic, ala stainless steel).

Honestly, I've never known a core plug to have a magnetic end on it so I don't really beleive it, but I'm just wondering where else it could have come from and that's the only other suggestion I have. The temp sender is a definite possibility, good work nuc!

yes copper or brass i suspect but for a sump magnet to get to the top without sticking to something is near impossible i reckon, robs probably right, sounds a good shout but just to be on the safe side i would buy a spare head off me and strip it to bits under very close scrutiny just to make sure its nothing important ;) :lol:
