It should have a small rubber cap on the top to stop water getting in there.

But then how does it breathe :? Or does it just pop off if jobby goes bad.

Apparently on Bighorns/Troopers you're supposed to extend the breather using hose if you intend on doing any serious offroading, but it's otherwise left open to the atmosphere. Playing in deep water will still require dropping out and replacing the transmission oil/fluid though :(

It's not a sealed rubber cap, it's like the kind of top hat things you get on some chimneys (if that makes sense - I've not long got out from under the car, am knackered and not thinking straight!)
