H22 NA/Project, opinions on part list.

Post by Darkam » Thu Mar 05, 2015 1:21 am

Hi all.

So as some of you may know, I'm planing on doing a H22 build with stock parts. Till now the question was : What car shoul I put around it ? I've made my choice and will find a cheap 3rd gen 4WS as a dayli then put the H22 in my F20A4 5th gen.
For costs reasons the build will be made softly but surely. All gaskets replaced, almost no aftermarket parts, no tune.
I don't exclude to -one day- put it on the 3rd gen and make it more extreme, at the condition it runs fine on the 5th gen.

So here it is :

Head :
H22A7 => Stock cams, stock valves, stock intake mani with port matched to the head (if needed), sharpened intake edges, polished exhaust side, bored TB to plenum, H22A8 intake plastic pipe. Still need to check if it comes with hydrolic or spring LMAs, and what kind of header and downpipe I need to use the Meercat exhaust that was on a H22A red top, I absolutely want to use it.

Bottom end :
Random H22 bloc with 50mm main journal (so excluding H22 bloc < to 1997). H23 cranckshaft, H23 rods, Type S pistons. Will check clearance in this configuration beetween valves and pistons so it will help me chose the headgasket thikness and let me know if I can have the head skimmed. Manual tensioner. Findanza flywheel. Still need to know wich crank pulley I must use (H22 or H23?) and wich flywheel (H22/H23?).

Gearbox : U2Q7. May change 5th gear pinions as I have a M2U5 one at home and will have a M2J4, need to check ratios. I absolutely don't know what clutch kit to use, I mean from wich model.

ECU : Stock H22A7.

I will start to collect parts ASAP (already checking for good things here on LG) so I can start working. This is my first time opening on engine so I'll find all documents I need and take my time to make things good. Will try, according to my budget to replace everything that can be a pain in the ass to replace once in the car so I can really enjoy the car once it's runing... if I'm successfull :)

So, if you see anything wrong, or have any suggestions, please let me know :)

I'll say that with the mods you're choosing and the intake fettling, you're going to need a tune for it to run efficiently.

Those specs are so close to an H22 red top engine why not save your self the hassle and just buy an ATR H22a7? Is the effort worth the tiny bit of extra compression? If I were you I would save the cash and spend it on a tunable ECU. I think you will see bigger gains that way.

I'm yet to get my H22a7 retuned, but it's as standard and tuned on an AEM EMS. Hearsay says it was pushing 240bhp. I've since improved on the entire breathing system (except for the ATR inlet manifold it was already running), and now I'm fairly positive it is actually going to achieve that figure. The torque is wicked  8-)

Nafe you car certainly was very quick when previous owner took me out in it. Felt quicker than my Type S pre supercharger because as you say the torque was nicely delivered.

Lol, you checked your compression if you run type s pistins and a h23 crank?

Also did you have a read up on the failures of type s pistons in this sort of build due to that? Even on decent maps.

@ Merlin : As you said it would be more simple to have a H22A7 tuned rather than puting in H23/Type S components. But, in the future, if I decide to go with a more aggressive way, all the bottom end will already be in place and the whole thing will just need a tune for news mods. I don't want to dissassemble the head from the bottom end in case I decide to put it on a 3rd gen.
The idea is more to make an enjoyable base that can evolve considering budget/desire :)
