I've seen rubber covers on the breather but they don't allow it to vent - I assumed that was what you meant.

:think: are you sure yours is both rubber and a vent cap (rather than a cover)? That's intriguing if so...

It was certainly rubber and given to me by Merlin who I assume already had an identical one on both his 5th and 4th gen.

I can't recall exactly how it was constructed, but inside was definitely more involved than a basic cap.

Out of interest, what would happen if the gearbox couldn't breathe? I imagine it's purely to do with expansion of gases due to heat?

Yup I lost my 4G one during my engine swap so bought a replacement, then found the original :mrgreen:

I would think that would be it. The gearbox internals will get mighty hot.
