Car tax with no V5 doc?

Post by Dino » Thu Aug 27, 2015 12:00 pm

Guys.

I pick up a new car this weekend and will only have the sales slip part of the V5.

As car tax laws changed last year, can i still tax the car online with the sales part of the V5 as the DVLA will have no record of the sale at this point or the new owner, as tax is listed to the owner and not the car (under new rules).

Can anyone provide a little advice? Cheers.

Had the same situation with Stace's new car a couple months back. You can only do it at the post office.

Actually, you can do it online with the tear off slip these days. Just did it the other week when my cousin bought a car, you punch in the code on the slip (V5C/2) and you're away!

You can do it over the phone as well :) online via a smart phone is probably quickest/easiest, you just need the ref no. From the green slip as above.

If you know the reg (and I assume you do), pump it in here: https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

Will tell you all things!

Yep - have a look at the V5 for whatever other car you have at the mo and you'll see that the first 4 digits of the V5C/2 are different to the first 4 digits on the main V5C (so that must be how they link it to the new owner rather than the previous).

Actually... This is sad, but  when you get your new V5 through, see if the new V5 document number matches the number on your previous V5C/2, or if it's different? (that will answer whether the V5C/2 number is a 'pre-assignment' of the new V5C document number, or if it's just a one-off code specific to that V5C/2 :ugeek: ).

Apologies! I remember now. It was because we didn't even have the V5 tear-off. The car-sales had to apply for a new V5 for us.
